One of my favorite scenes from Band of Brothers was when Maj. Winters saluted lower-ranked Captain Sobel, who used to be his commanding officer. Captain Sobel should’ve responded immediately by saluting his superior, but hesitated and looked away in shame. Major Winters called him out on it by saying, “Captain Sobel, we salute the rank — not the man.”
John Piper recalls a sermon he preached in 1993 prior to Clinton’s inauguration, titled “Being Pro-Life Christians Under a Pro-Choice President.” There are many issues Barack Obama will have to face head on, including the abortion issue. Today we celebrate his inauguration as the 44th President of the United States. May we honor him today by expecting much of him as our nation’s leader under God.
We will honor you by expecting from you straightforward answers to straightforward questions. We would not expect this from a con-man, but we do expect it from an honorable man. . . . You have immense power as President of the United States. To wield it against the protection of the unborn without giving a public accounting in view of moral and scientific reality would be dishonorable. We will honor you by expecting better.
